Brick + Mortar, Jive Grave, Flying Cranes @ Maxwell's 2.10.11

Maxwell’s maintains its reputation for sustaining fertile ground for new and breaking artists, even as the cement and soil around it are frozen solid in mid-February.  The Hoboken venue proved the perfect meeting place for three stellar bands hailing from Philly, Brooklyn, and Asbury Park, whose members all have deep roots in the Garden State.

Robin Carine and his band Cranes Are Flying from The City of Brotherly Love brought their melodic soul-infused rock-n-roll sound.  Cranes Are Flying recently released their first EP ‘Somnambulist,’ which shows a lot of potential for the band whose sound is layered in beds of soft funk melodies, with churning rhythm guitar as Carine’s tenor-ific voice articulates an emo-pop sensibility, anchored by real rock.

On the avant-garde tick, Geo Wyeth crossed the two rivers with his band Jive Grave, and had in tow a pair of brass players, including trumpet and saxophone, while he played keys and guitar, backed by a drum kit.  Jive Grave, who’s second EP ‘Blackone’ was just released in the fall of 2010, has its roots in jazz and soul, while his songwriting and performance style is purposefully indecisive, constantly evolving rhythmically and melodically.

For Today, We Came As Romans, Woe Is Me, Texas in July & The Word Alive made an appearence at the Croc Rock in Allentown, PA on February 5th. One of their many sold out shows on this current tour. Spoke with many of the kids and even elder folks/parents at the venue saying how surprised the turnout was and how blown away they were by the performances. Regardless of the weather mother nature has been giving to the East Coast for the past month everything ran smoothly and on time. Every band that performed that night had a huge turnout in singing/chanting/dancing right along to every song that was performed. No one was ever left out.

Ozomatli, Cracked Latin @ Irving Plaza 2.3.11

Ozomatli (Photos & word by Chris Gersbeck)

Last night’s Ozomatli show at Irving Plazawas a reminder of how seamlessly the genres of salsa and rock go hand in hand, when done with the right amount of energy and talent. Of course those aren’t the only genres mastered by the long running Los Angeles group. There were also hints of funk, hip-hop and reggae throughout the night, particularly during a medley of covers that included Junior Murvin’s dub classic “Police and Thieves”. Energizing the crowd from the moment they set foot on stage, Ozomatli have certainly maintained a devoted following throughout the years; fans were well aware of newer songs off of their 2010 album Fire Away and were excited to hear older tracks from their debut and 2001’s Embrace the Chaos. The ten piece all-star salsa group Cracked Latin opened the show as the crowd at Irving Plaza began filling the large 1,200 capacity venue. A fitting opener, Cracked Latin played originals and covers, the highlight of their set being a rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Let’s Spend the Night Together”. Though the large band barely had enough room to fit on stage, it didn’t stop the group from moving their entire set, and that energy bled into the audience to pave the way for a night of dancing. - Chris Gersbeck

Bon Jovi @ Starland Ballroom 1.27.11

Bon Jovi played a benefit show for Parker Family Health Center this past Thursday, January 27th. The Red Bank based charity is a volunteer-based, free health care facility where Monmouth County residents without medical insurance can go for treatment. Tickets for the all will-call sold out show went for $250 a pop. The Sayreville native played a generous 23 song set made up of mostly covers, which ranged from The Beatles to Linda Ronstadt to Foundations. Bon Jovi's full Starland Ballroom setlist along with some videos of his performance can be found below. Tris McCall of The Star-Ledger wrote an in-depth review of the show. I highly recommend checking that out here. Excerpt of the write-up below.

The veteran rocker didn’t preach at the 90-minute Jon Bon Jovi and Friends concert. He simply told the audience what the Parker Family Medical Center means to him and to his family, praised a few doctors by name, and let the songs do the talking. Most of these were covers. Bon Jovi led a 17-piece band through enthusiastic renditions of rock standards ("Start Me Up," "So You Want to Be a Rock ’n’ Roll Star") and blues classics ("See See Rider," "634-5789"). Southside Johnny joined him for four numbers, including a convincing duet rendition of Sam and Dave’s "Hold on, I’m Comin.’ " A few of these interpretations were awkward — Bon Jovi’s industrial-strength pipes do not easily wrap around a song as sultry as "Oh, Pretty Woman." Others, like a boisterous version of "Glad All Over" by the Dave Clark Five, flashed a rare glimpse of Bon Jovi the pop geek. Only deep into the set did he turned his attention to his own material, performing hits such as "Prayer," "Wanted Dead or Alive" and "You Give Love a Bad Name." [Tris McCall]

Scranton's The Menzingers & Tigers Jaw passed through Philadelphia's First Unitarian Church this past Sunday, January 23rd. The packed show also included Philly's Algernon Cadwallader & Glocca Morra. Our premier photographer Dan Bassini was there to grab 50+ shots of the event. The Menzingers currently only have one upcoming show, which happens to be one of the Bouncing Souls' rescheduled Home For The Holidays shows at The Stone Pony. That date happens to be February 10th and will also include Strike Anywhere and Dirty Tactics. Tickets are still on-sale for all dates, but are going quick. They can be picked up here. A full review of Sunday's show can be found here. Excerpt below.

Near the end of the show, fans were crawling to the stage.  They would reach for the microphone to help sing along and the band even supported that.  It was obvious that the band was loving the attention they were getting.  The bond between this band and their fans was like nothing I had ever witnessed before.  One major highlight was when the guitarist sat upon a fan’s shoulder and proceeded to shred, sing, and just go wild.  Almost immediately after, he puked and quickly responded to the crowd, “I just vomited everywhere and I’m not even intoxicated”  By the last song, there were at least thirty people on stage in one of the best ending performances I’ve ever been a part of. The Starting Line @ Starland Ballroom 1.7.11

By: David Glynn

So tonight I’m gonna party like its 1999. That’s what played as The Starting Line walked on stage last night and I don’t think anything could have better described how each person in that crowd felt. I don’t think I was fully aware of it at the time but the more I think about it, every song that was played and every word that I sang meant as much to me as it did the first time sang it. I know I wasn’t alone. It’s rare that you get the chance to follow a band from conception to fruition, let alone over the course of 11 years. From where I stood, watching everyone go through the same euphoric experience, I wouldn’t have been able to tell you if I was 15 and watching them play to 30 kids at the Birch Hill right after the first beer of my life or if I was 25 and watching them play to a sold out crowd right after my first beer of the night. Although the faces may have been a little older and our amount of life experience infinitely greater, the way it all felt was exactly how I remembered; fully intact and untouched by responsibility, struggle or success.

Every song was the song I wanted to hear. The set list was comprehensive with songs from their first release “With Hopes of Starting Over” to their most recent “Direction”. Even with the lengthy hiatus, they were as tight as I’d ever seen. More importantly, they were having fun just like the rest of us. You could feel the exchange of emotion between the entertainment and the entertained. Just as I was looking back on the past 10 years, wondering “when did everything get so complicated’; they were doing the same. During the two song encore, to my surprise, they played a new song “Luck” that despite not knowing a single word, I really enjoyed.

The night after one of New York City’s trashiest displays of decadence, the city streets turned to musical devotion as a sold out crowd of 3,500 marched into the Best Buy Theater in Time Square to see Long Island hardcore outfit Glassjaw start off the New Year right. As the crowd waited for the show to start I couldn’t help but worry about setting expectations into motion. Glassjaw has one of the most astounding fan bases I have seen in my almost 15 years of concert viewing as they can be easily alienated by the bands sudden disappearance for years on end but as always wait with anticipation for their return. For a band that hasn’t released an album in eight years, every performance is treated as a new beginning to the fans and upon seeing the crowd in attendance it was evident that that’s what mattered the most and that expectations mean nothing.

The show started off a bit sluggish as the first opener, Long Island quintet These People, left quite an air of mystery over their 6 song opening set. Untitled numbers and a rough mix of musical styles made the group a fitting opener for Glassjaw but not good enough for a repeat performance in the eyes of the eager crowd.

While the first acts frantic pace kept the crowd interested if not confused, the somber opening of Brooklyn psych rockers Tidal Arms set left some fans murmuring in the crowd the words Kings of Leon. However these misjudgments in style were thwarted immediately as the band plowed through a thunderous and at time unimaginative display of poise and precision. For a band that has been together for a very short time the group demanded attention with fantastic performances from drummer Francis Mark and bassist Patrick Southern. Lead singer and guitarist Tom Tierney proved hypnotically frightening as he began the night with such gentle vocals only to crank it up a couple notches on each song to almost dark and brooding levels by the time the band left the stage to a respectable applause.

An almost identical lineup played the church back in September. Dan Bassini was also at that show and grabbed some great photos. During the pop-punk stacked show Philly's premier pop-punk group, The Wonder Years' played a surprise 3 song set. As you can see above, Soupy participated in some epic stage dives. The massive bill played to a at capacity crowd. Man Overboard do not have any upcoming shows, but for good reason! The NJ quartet are headed to LA to record their Rise Records debut. More details to come soon!

Passion Pit @ Wellmont Theatre New Year's Eve

More Photos Here

Passion Pit brought in the New Year with two Wellmont Theatre shows this past week. NJ's Titus Andronicus opened the sold out Thursday night date, while Philadelphia's Man Man filled in for Slick Rick on Friday, due to the veteran rapper's last minute cancellation. We were able to stop by Passion Pit's New Year's Eve performance and grab some photos. The Cambridge, MA group's setlist consisted mostly of material off their debut LP, Manners, but also included some songs of 2008's Chunk of Change EP and a cover of The Cranberries song "Dream". A video of singer, Michael Angelakos counting down to 2011 can be found below. Passion Pit did also mention that they will be taking some time off, which I'd assume would be to work on a new record. Let's hope so.
