Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at 2:22 AM While home for the holidays, Mikey (Ergs) Yannich stopped New Brunswick's McCormick's this past Thursday (Christmas Eve's Eve) and performed an acoustic set. Ride The Fury's Pat Gerity caught video of Mikey performing The Ergs' song "Pray For Rain", which can be seen above. Gerity also caught video of The Romances, which are Ramones tribute band made up of Seasick members, performing "Blitzkrieg Bop". You can find video of that over at Ride The Fury's website. If you missed it, we recently covered one of the two Ergs reunion shows at Asbury Lanes.

One good thing about CMJ if you can't make it is they'll usually be some CMJ band filled NJ shows during that time frame. This Sunday is a perfect example of that. New Brunswick basement, Fuck Mountain will be hosting a last minute show with Dead Gaze, Blackhawks, Slow Animal, Slutever and Bummer Sanders. Most of the bands are touring, so definitely go and support! Check out a Dead Gaze track below. More info here.

Last month Red Bull announced that they would be bringing their corporate brand to basically the last place in live music where corporate sponsorship isn't present, basement shows. New Brunswick basement shows to be exact. The company launched their Noise Complaint campaign where upcoming bands would compete for the chance to open for Thursday at their holiday Starland Ballroom show. The multi-billion dollar energy drink company apparently (expectedly) received some backlash from the New Brunswick community. Suggesting that this exposure would lead to NBPD shutting down more basement shows and that some bands/fans purposely play/attend basement shows to separate themselves from corporate interest.
To make a long story short, Red Bull has now moved the competition from a New Brunswick basement to a more legal venue, The Court Tavern. The surprisingly all-ages show, which also happens to be free is set to take place November 13th from 3:30pm-6:30pm. An announcement from a Red Bull representative can be found below. To read Red Bull's lengthy write-up detailing what the campaign is all about go here.
All, this show has moved to Court Tavern in New Brunswick http://www.myspace.com/thecourttavernnj. We do not want to bring attention to something that would potentially cause the City of New Brunswick to shut down even more basement shows than they already do. Show will be on Saturday November 13th from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM, all ages, no cover. Bands will be announced on Monday.

Friday, October 8, 2010 at 1:30 AM Montclair's Those Mockingbirds were recently featured on Pollifax.com's series called Wanderer Sessions. You can check out a video of them performing their song "The Deer and the Derrick" as well as a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain"in a New Brunswick parking garage above. Make sure to check out all of the Wanderer Sessions as well as the complete story on the Those Mockingbirds' session here. Excerpt below. The rock quintet are currently in the studio recording new material that should hopefully be out in the near future.
Busy, busy, busy. That day there were a bunch of tornado warnings issued out for the New York-New Jersey area, coupled with a bunch of tiny tornadoes shooting down into New York-New Jersey area. I was enclosed in my car. I was parked by a meter that was flashing red. It was empty. There was a storm pouring down arrows and shafts of rainwater. There were girls wearing skirts and using their little books to shield the tops of their heads while the rest of their bodies got blasted by the rain. There were other people too, you know, doing the same thing. Muscular guys with their sleeveless shirts and suited professors and little Asian girls with their tiny dogs. They were all shielding the tops of their heads with their books and briefcases and dogs while the rest of their bodies got shot with water. Nobody checks the weather anymore. [Wander Sessions]

Thursday, August 26, 2010 at 5:09 AM New Brunswick's Communipaw were recently featured on Pollifax.com's series called Wanderer Sessions. You can check out a video of them performing in a forest in New Brunswick above. Make sure to check out the complete story here. Excerpt below.
This is the 30th Wanderer Session since we started back in September. 30 bands filmed. 30 lessons learned. So much has changed since I first filmed Dan Rauchwerk at Buccleuch Park for the first ever session. Back then, I was satisfied with shooting acoustic videos of songs, trying to capture those three minutes of musical greatness in one bubble along with whatever sirens blaring off, cars passing by, street walkers dancing, everything really that just happened to be witnesses to these musicians playing in the most random places. Interacting with them. But as I learn more and more things about this new medium, I start to think and learn and experiment more with what can be done with the music I record; what can be done with the world around it at that second; what can be done with the random people clapping, the gentle whisper of the tress at the right times, the distinct bite of the lip of the musician at specific lyrics. Suddenly, moments become stories; shows become films. At least in my head. All for the sake of keeping up with my favorite Frenchman whose work with music videography continues to mesmerize me.

Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 2:15 PM Above you'll find a video of Julian Lynch and his band, which features Alex Bleeker performing at New Brunswick's Fuck Mountain this past Saturday, August 7th. Neither does it have the best audio or camera work, apparently because the "vibes were too heavy". Either way the video is definitely worth checking out if you've yet to have a Julian Lynch live experience. Also, Pitchfork TV is currently featuring Julian Lynch's video for "A Day At The Racetrack" as well as an acoustic performance of Real Estate in a parking lot during Pitckfork Fest. You can find both of those videos below. Julian Lynch, Ducktails and many others will be performing at the Underwater Peoples showcase this Saturday @ Shea Stadium (diy venue) in Brooklyn.

Pujol

Ted Leo made a special appearance at New Brunswick's Meat Town USA last night. The overly packed basement show was originally set just to feature Nashville's Pujol and Canada's The Danks, but Meat Town announced with two days notice that the punk-rock veteran and NJ native would be stopping by for a solo performance. This wasn't Pujol's first time playing Meat Town and you could notice by the crowds reception. Even with the crowd constantly knocking into the band and having their pedals kicked around the lofi punk/shoegaze group somehow managed to plow through their set almost flawlessly. Due to demands by the crowd, the quartet closed their set with their song "Too Safe", which you can download below. Ted Leo played an excitingly long set of songs that were picked as he went along. He obliged to many requests, threw in older songs and even played a cover of Aimee Mann's "Freeway". Best of all, even though he was playing solo that didn't stop the NB crowd from starting mosh pits during certain parts of the performance. Ted Leo will be off for the rest of the summer, but will head out on a national tour come this September. He currently has no other local dates listed.
