Delicate Steve played their first of two record release shows at Montclair's Meat Locker this past Friday, February 4th. New York City based, The French Kings opened the bill. Think you might dig a group that sounds similar to a 21st century Queen on acid? Well, if so the duo is currently giving their Ladies And Gentleman LP away for free. You should get on downloading it over at their bandcamp. Preview their track "Roman Bombast" below. Sparta Philhormonic were next up. The Sparta, NJ turned Philadelphia duo play upbeat indie-rock mixed with punk and some shoegaze. You can download their song "Everywhere At Once, And Nowhere To Go" for free (via Atlas Records free compilation) below. All of their upcoming tour dates can be found here.

Montclair's Delicate Steve performed their (un)usual mind expanding live show in the underground venue. As stated before the show was in celebration of the release of their debut LP Wondervisions. The album officially dropped last Tuesday via the David Byrne (Talking Heads) run Luaka Bop. If you missed it the group recently released a music video definitely worth checking out for their song "Butterfly". This was Delicate Steve's first time at the Meat Locker since the NJU presented show with Times New Viking back in September. All of Delicate Steve's upcoming tour dates can be found below.

The Front Bottoms made their return to Montclair's Meat Locker this past Wednesday, November 3rd. Joining them on the bill were Bloomfield's Suburban Grass, New Brunswick's People In Charge and Montclair's Bible Gun. NJU photographer Ken Lavey was there to grab some great shots. Jersey Beat editor and Star-Ledger contributor, Jim Testa covered the show for both publications. You can out Jim's Jersey Beat write-up here. An excerpt from his Star-Ledger article can be found below, full story here.

It’s 8 p.m. Do you know where your children are?

They might just be having the time of their lives at the Meat Locker, an underground — literally and figuratively — all-ages venue in Montclair where audiences from their early teens to early 20s have a place to hang out and hear music.

Even more importantly, it’s a space where young musicians get to make music. And what they’re playing might just blow you away.

James Wells of the Gay Blades once called the Meat Locker “the greasiest venue in New Jersey” — but he meant that as a compliment. [Jim Testa - The Star-Ledger]

The Gay Blades played a special $2 show at Montclair's Meat Locker this past Saturday, September 25th. The date was apart of the NJ trio's short basement tour to promote their soon-to-be released 2nd studio album Savages. If you missed it we recently interviewed the group, where we discussed their new record, basement shows and their plans for the rest of 2010. Be sure to check that out here. Pre-order Savages, which is due out October 5th via Triple Crown Records here. Tris McCall of The Star-Ledger recently did an in-depth piece on the group's forth coming album. You can find that here. Excerpt below.

“Savages,” then, is a chronicle of a deeply troubled period in Westfield’s life. Because it’s a Gay Blades album, it’s alternately joyous and snarky, devoted to cheap thrills and grand gestures, and decorated in broad, vivid strokes. Because it was written when it was, there’s a ferocious riptide of anger and dismay waiting for the unwary listener. Westfield, who has never been big on self-censoring, pours out frustration and confusion in a white-hot torrent. “Shadow’s Like a Ghost” is a haunted ballad; “Burns and Shakes” is unhinged with heartbreak. “Why Winter in Detroit,” the album’s centerpiece, is an existential riddle disguised as a rude come-on. Delicate Steve, Times New Viking @ Meat Locker 9.23.10

Delicate Steve

Times New Viking

NJ's Delicate Steve played a home-town show this past Thursday at Montclair's Meat Locker. The group was just coming off a very successful Union Pool residency, which was attended by members of TV On The Radio, Dirty Projectors, Yeasayer and Fang Island. Their crowd at the Meat Locker confirms their quickly growing popularity. While billed as support for Matador's Times New Viking everyone at the show seemed to be there for Delicate Steve. As someone whose heard their yet-to-be released album Wondervisions, I can say their songs take on a whole new life in a live setting. Delicate Steve is a band that clearly pays attention to details and takes pride in their performances. They leave nothing out of their live show that was apart of their recordings. Unfortunately when Times New Viking took the stage the crowd had dwindled to a handful of people, but the group still played a fairly long set, satisfying the few that did stick around. The group is now set to head out on the Guided By Voices reunion tour starting next week. All of their upcoming dates can be seen here.

Weatherbox made their return to Montclair's Meat Locker last Thursday. The Doghouse Records group are currently out in support of their 7" titled Christpuncher, which can be download for only $1.98 here. The San Diego quartet are in the middle of a national tour that wraps up July 24th in Arizona. The group is then slated to head back into the studio to record their 3rd studio album, which will be the follow up to 2009's The Cosmic Drama. Thursday's show featured a new Weatherbox bassist, that happens to be an NJ native by the name of Wes who is no stranger to the NJ music scene. Check out some recent videos of Weatherbox performing below, including a video (not very good quality) of a last minute NJ show they played the very next night in Hillsborough.
