Another article on the Ridgewood music explosion

NPR recently kicked off a new weekly series where they ask musicians why music scenes grow where they do. They of-course chose the bands that came out of the Ridgewood NJ area, which include Titus Andronicus, Real Estate, Vivian Girls, Julian Lynch and Family Portrait. NPR talked with members of Real Estate and Julian Lynch specifically. You can check out the full article here. Excerpt below.

"Ridgewood High School hosted these things called Open Mic Nights. All of the bands that are in this indie rock scene now would frequent these open mic nights," he says, "myself, Martin Courtney from Real Estate, Matthew Mondanile from Real Estate and Ducktails, Julian Lynch, Evan Brody from Family Portrait. It was cool, it was an opportunity for you as a high school student to showcase what you were doing on the weekends, which for a lot of us was worshiping bands likeWeezer and learning how to play their songs." Underwater Peoples Summer Showcase took place last night at Brooklyn DIY spot, Shea Stadium. The bill featured mostly Ridgewood area groups that have been involved with the NJ label in some way, shape or form. One of the more prominent NJ groups, Real Estate played an unannounced set, which kicked off around 3:30 AM. The well attended showcase spanned over 8 hours and hosted 11 bands including: Julian Lynch, Ducktails, Air Waves, Alex Bleeker and the Freaks and Family Portrait to name a few. You can view the entire line-up here

Underwater Peoples is currently sporting a catalog that is just about all sold out. You can check out what is left to pick-up and what the label has released thus far here. Underwater is currently readying for a new Family Portrait release, which is yet to have a release date. In other Family Portrait news, the group has quite a few shows coming up, including another NYC date with Julian Lynch this Wednesday and a few more dates with Tennis. For all the details go here. Julian Lynch played Fuck Mountain. Pitchfork TV featuring Real Estate & Julian Lynch videos.

Above you'll find a video of Julian Lynch and his band, which features Alex Bleeker performing at New Brunswick's Fuck Mountain this past Saturday, August 7th. Neither does it have the best audio or camera work, apparently because the "vibes were too heavy". Either way the video is definitely worth checking out if you've yet to have a Julian Lynch live experience. Also, Pitchfork TV is currently featuring Julian Lynch's video for "A Day At The Racetrack" as well as an acoustic performance of Real Estate in a parking lot during Pitckfork Fest. You can find both of those videos below. Julian Lynch, Ducktails and many others will be performing at the Underwater Peoples showcase this Saturday @ Shea Stadium (diy venue) in Brooklyn.

Q: "You feelin it?"

A: "A lil bit"

The Star-Ledger profiled the recent surge of indie bands to come out of the Ridgewood area.

Sarim Al-Rawi (Real Estate) Patrick Stickles (Titus Andronicus)

Tris McCall of The Star-Ledger recently profiled the booming Ridgewood scene. He talked to members of Titus Andronicus, Real Estate, Vivian Girls, Ducktails and Julian Lynch about their start, sound and friendship amongst the musicians from the area. If there was ever a time to use the clique term "must read", now would be it. Be sure to check out the article here.

Sedate Ridgewood is currently in the midst of a pop boom. In the wake of the national success of Titus Andronicus, a remarkable number of distinct musical voices have sounded off from the grassy banks of the Saddle River. In addition to his work in Real Estate, guitarist Mondanile plays in the gentle, pastoral Ducktails; bassist Bleeker fronts the Freaks. Julian Lynch, who has collaborated with Mondanile and Courtney, puts out warm, experimental psych-pop albums under his own name. Samuel Franklin, who performs as the fuzzed-out Fluffy Lumbers, and nervy rockers Ian Drennan and Alex Craig, who call themselves Big Troubles, are slightly younger but part of the same group of friends. They’ve all been embraced by MP3 webloggers, reviewers, national music magazines, Bushwick tastemakers and booking agents at the city’s most adventurous concert spaces. Hipster Brooklyn, it turns out, loves Ridgewood. [Tris McCall]
