Nostalgia Post 13#: Humble Beginnings
Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 4:56 PM

Humble Beginnings are set to play two reunion shows this weekend. The shows are the first for the NJ pop-punk pioneers in nearly a decade. In the spirit of this occasion we figured a Humble Beginnings Nostalgia Post was in order. The only problem is, the photos we do have of Humble Beginnings (courtsey of Chris Pham of the now defunct NJMusicSource.com) are unlabeled and sparse. We're not going to let that stop us though. You can check out the remain photos from the unnamed show below. If you haven't yet be sure to check out recent Humble Beginnings interview.

Friday, October 29, 2010 at 12:55 PM About 11 years ago Saves the Day stopped by a small, Goth/Industrail, Rochester NY nightclub named Club Vertex. The NJ group were out in support of their debut record Can't Slow Down. Their set also included what they call "new songs" at the time such as: Holly, Hox Forget Me Not and Shoulder to the Wheel. Just about 3 months later the young band would release their break out record Through Being Cool via Equal Vision Records. To catch classics like "I'm Sorry I'm Leaving", "Always Ten Feet Tall", "Blindfolded" and many others be sure to check out their entire set. Part A above. Parts B, C and D below.
Nostalgia Post #10: Armor For Sleep @ Stingrays 4.12.09
Thursday, October 29, 2009 at 8:09 PM

In the wake of Armor For Sleep's recent break up, I decided it would be fitting to take people back to their beginning. Back in April of 2002 Armor For Sleep still had their original line up with Paul Abrahamian on guitar and AJ Resnick on drums, their debut album was still over a year away from its release and they were still promoting their original 5 song demo, which included "Dream To Make Believe", "Slip Like Space", "All Warm", "Phantoms Now" and "Pointless Forever".
April 12th Armor For Sleep shared the Stingrays stage at Birch Hill in Old Bridge with Welcome Home Travis, Tokyo Rose and others. Soon to follow was a tour with Midtown, a Skate & Surf appearance and a record deal with Equal Vision records, but even those events were just the start of the bands career. Unfortunately on October 28th Singer/guitarist Ben Jorgensen issued a statement confirming the disbandment of Armor For Sleep, putting what fans had been speculating for months to rest.

The Starting Line

Outline

Random Task

It's hard to believe Brand New, The Starting Line, future members of Armor For Sleep & Steel Train were all once included on the same bill, but back in the summer of 2001 at the now defunct M + M Hall in Old Bridge, NJ that was exactly the case.
Brand New were 3 months away from releasing their debut record on Triple Crown Records Your Favorite Weapon.
The Starting Line released their Drive-thru Records debut With Hopes of Starting Over EP just a month earlier.
Outline ended up signing to Triple Crown Records, but later disband. Jack went on to form Steel Train. Later Evan Winiker from Random Task joined the group as basses, then Matthew Goldman joined as a touring guitarist. Eventually Dan Silbert would end up replacing Matthew as Steel Train's second guitarist.
When Random Task disband, drummer Ben Jorgensen went on to record a three song demo, recording all of the instruments himself. The demo turned out to be Armor For Sleep's first material. The three songs were "Dream To Make Believe", "Slip Like Space" and "Pointless Forever".

rare Nostalgia Post #6: The Casualties @ The Cove 1997
Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 6:58 PM
Once upon a time there was this club in Roselle Park that hosted all age rock shows called The Cove. Though the club wasn't known for having the best shows, every now and then a great tour would pass through. Back in 1997 the well-known street punk band The Casualties stopped by The Cove giving the venue one of its best shows. Videos of the performance are below.
Twelve years later The Casualties continue to tour and release music. Tonight the band will take the stage at Asbury Lanes in support of their newly released, We Are All We Have. The show starts at 8pm and is with Youth Brigade, Off With Their Heads & Detournment. More info here.

The Cove Nostalgia Post #5: The Clash @ Convention Hall 6.1.82
Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 7:58 PM
The Clash stopped by the Asbury Park Convention Hall June 1st, 1982. An excerpt from a review of the show & videos are below.
Peforming in the stark 4500-person capacity Convention Hall, a relic of a building constructed in the 1920s, the Clash ripped off a searing two-hour set of political rock and reggae. Their energy level was equal to, if not greater than, their climactic efforts at the Bonds club in Times Square last year. They acted like a band on a mission, bashing out a marathon show and then rearing back for seven encore tunes, spanning the grisly "Somebody Got Murdered," the foreboding "Armagideon Time," the angry "Straight to Hell" (a vicious swipe at British militarism) and the enduring cowboy rocker, "I Fought The Law."
Chimes, who was actually the band's original drummer and played on its first album, showed his mettle down this stretch. He played with a heavier rock bass beat than the more jazz-influenced Headon and was tireless. He wouldn't leave the stage, nearly stealing the show by flamboyantly calling the band back for yet another two songs, including the antipolice anthem "Jimmy Jazz."
The night had begun dismally with an awful set by the nine-woman New York band, Pulsallama, a crude, shrieking group that mentioned its name in every song, for which the members were hailed with a monsoon of debris from the impatient crowd.
Following a calvary charge trumpet call, the Clash, who have named this war-like tour "The North American Campaign," quickly turned the mood around. Dressed in army fatigues, hats and shades (looking like a jungle guerilla), Strummer immediately slugged through "London Calling" and "Safe European Home." It was early proof that his April AWOL stint in Paris (taken because of overwork, he later said, though it caused the cancellation of an entire British tour) had not diminished his dedication.
Proceeding apace, the Clash rifled off familiar political anthems: "Guns of Brixton," "Working For the Clampdown" and "Spanish Bombs," a Spanish Civil War lament that Strummer introduced provacatively by saying, "This is not a Bruce Springsteen number, this is supposed to be poetry." It was a humorously caustic dig at Springsteen (whose home turf is Asbury Park) and was done, Strummer confided later, "to wind the crowd up." Needless to say, it did. [Black Market Clash]

Midtown was two months away from releasing Save The World, Lose The Girl, their debut on Drive-thru, which would later pick up distro through MCA.
Saves the Day had released their second LP, Through Being Cool two months earlier on Equal Vision.
Catch-22 was still supporting their debut record Keasby Nights, which came out in 1998 on Victory Records. They would release their second LP, A Lone in a Crowd the coming fall.
Hot Rod Circuit had just released their first record If I Knew Now What I Knew Then the September before. Through out the years, songs from the album such as "Weak Warm", "Remover", and "Irish Car Bomb", continued to stay fan favorites.
The Movielife were supporting their first LP It's Go Time, which just came out the year before. The band would release their break-through record This Time Next Year the following Halloween.
