The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences honored Sir Paul McCartney this Friday with the MusiCares Person of the Year award. The award ceremony was a tribute concert with performances by McCartney and an eclectic group of musical admirers.
Neil Young and Crazy Horse (who are working on two new albums together) took to the stage together for the first time in eight years for their rendition of “I Saw Her Standing There”. Two of the biggest name acts of the night were Coldplay, who did “We Can Work It Out”, and Katy Perry (who seemed to be getting attacked by a giant flower) sang “Hey Jude”. The other performers were Foo Fighters (doing “Jet), Alicia Keys (with “Blackbird”), Tony Bennett (with “Here, There and Everywhere”), James Taylor and Diana Krall (with “Yesterday” and “For No One”), Alison Krauss (with “No More Lonely Nights”), Norah Jones (with “Oh Darling”), Duane Eddy (with And I Love Her), Sergio Mendes (with “Fool On The Hill” and Cirque du Soleil doing part of Love.
The Beatle himself performed some of his old songs: “Magical Mystery Tour”, “Junior’s Farm”, the “Golden Slumbers” medley. He also did “My Valentine” and “I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter” from Kisses on the Bottom, his new album, which came out last week via Hear Music.
