Nocturnal Me have returned with a new EP entitled Two-Faced (Apparition Records). The band, fronted by NJ's own Dave Melillo, didn't just stop there. The group also released the One-Faced EP, an acoustic version of Two-Faced. Melillo took some time to talk about the new music, social networking and which singer he'd like to have on a NM track.
1) How excited are you about Two-Faced finally coming out?
SO stoked. I never imagined that this project would be three releases deep thus far and it's a great feeling. That song "Survivor" by Destiny's Child is blaring in my head at the moment.
2) What was it like self-producing the EP?
Perfect. I got to put my hands all over the song in ways I would never have been able too if I had to compromise with a producer. It also made me care about the final product a lot more … I think bands tend to blame the producer/label if things go bad with the release, but with Two Faced I know I own it's success or failure.
3) How did you hook up with artist Manuel Rebollo for the cover art?
By chance. I saw some of his art on a blog online and I completely loved it. I loved it so much that he's also working on the artwork for my mixture.
4) The band also released One-Faced. What was the reason behind that?
People always ask for acoustic music from me. Instead of completely ignoring those people, Apparition thought it was important to incorporate an acoustic element into the release … ESPECIALLY since the bulk of the songs on this EP are an extreme departure from what I've done in the past. I dig how it came out.
5) Will Nocturnal Me play shows in the NJ/NYC area soon?
Thinking about a show on Long Island soon … Ill keep you posted.
6) What music are you currently listening to?
The new Incubus CD … Theophilus London … and a group called Does It Offend You, Yeah?
7) How important is social networking for musicians today?
Extremely important. I've been so wired into the social networking machine that I actually outsource my knowledge to different companies and festivals when they need to get new campaigns together. It's doubly important for someone like me who doesn't tour on the regular (or at all)
8) If you could have any artist do a guest spot on a Nocturnal Me album, who would it be and why?
Drake ... cause the song would be an automatic hit.
9)What are some of Nocturnal Me's plans for the rest of the year?
Write more music. Release more music. And bask in the glow of a successful release !!
