Last September, Gatsbys American Dream surprised everyone by reuniting on stage for the first time in 4 years. The band is currently recording new material for their upcoming album and will be performing at the Bamboozle Festival on Saturday April 30th. I had a chance to speak with G.A.D. vocalist Nic Newsham about the band's recent reunion, memories from the Bamboozle festival and thoughts on the music scene.
1) The band made a surprise reunion on stage this past September. What was that moment like?
That moment was super spontaneous and fun. Really got us excited about playing some more shows and writing some more songs.
2) G.A.D is recording new material with longtime producer Casey Bates. How are the new tracks coming along?
Three new tracks are totally done and we're just wrapping up on the fourth. Sorry it's taking a little longer than expected. All of our lives and schedules are drastically different.
3) What are some topics that these new songs are going to focus on?
There are some "fuck the man" songs on here as well as some "the scene is dead" songs and maybe even an introspective piece about gained perspective.
4) When will the new album be released?
Sooner than later i promise.
5) The band is performing a hometown show with MxPx next month. How excited is everybody about that?
Fucking stoked. Mxpx is playing life and general all the way through. That record was my favorite. I idolized Mxpx when I was a kid. And then we're gonna play our first show in like 4yrs. So I'm excited and nervous. The other dudes are excited too.
6) Gatsby's American Dream is also going to be performing at the Bamboozle festival in May. Any memories from the band's last appearance at the festival?
I remember playing outside in the rain/wind storm and being so pumped about how big our crowd was despite the weather. I also remember Chris Carabba joining fsf and not being able to get in and instead listened to Matt Pryor (get up kids) play acoustic for the couple hundred people in line that weren't able to get in the show. Awesome.
7) What are your thoughts on the current music scene?
There are some awesome bands and there are some really shitty bands. Seems the good ones are just getting harder to find. The shitty bands def have more money behind them.
8) Are there any bands out that that you think people should check out?
Listen to typhoon out of portland Oregon. Adam from fear before does a really cool band called "orbs" too. Throw that in yer ear.
9) Are there any touring plans set for the future?
I'm not sure what's up with that. Hopefully we can convince some cool bands to take us on tour when we play these festivals. The best way to do this is to bro down with dudes and we're all super fucking good at bro(ing) down.
10) What are some bands that you would like to hit the road with?
Saves The Day comes to mind. I would be awesome to go on tour with minus the bear too. YOU HEAR THAT SHAPIRO?
11) Is there something that you would like to say to the fans that have waited for this to happen?
Thank you for waiting for this to happen :)
