Interview: Fake Figures

California group Fake Figures will certainly be a band to look out for in 2012. The band (featuring ex-members of Hotwire, Atreyu and Scars of Tomorrow) just released their debut EP Hail The Sycophants (check out our review here). Guitarist Travis Miguel took some time to talk about the band's formation, recording the EP and thoughts on the current music scene.
1) How did the band form?
We've all known each other through our mutual circles of friends. I've known Bob Bradley (bass) for a number of years through playing shows in Atreyu with his previous band Scars of Tomorrow in our Orange County scene. Out of the blue, he asked me if I wanted to start a project and I jumped at the chance. We recruited Justin Pointer (drums) along the way and started writing. We eventually got in contact with Rus Martin (vox) and started working out the riffs and songs we had. Initially, it was just going to be a 4 piece, but it probably wouldn't have worked out very well in a live situation, so we got Heather Baker on board.
2) What was the recording/writing process for the EP?
Both Bob and I had ideas for songs so we traded riffs and whatnot and like most bands, basically just worked them out until we were happy with them. The EP was recorded by Pete Charrel in Orange County out of his home studio (Dexter Dog Studio). It was pretty relaxed and easy-going. Nothing too stressful or painful.
3) What's the meaning behind the title Hail The Sycophants?
You'd probably have to ask Rus about that one. His lyrics and titles are very vague and open to interpretation. A "sycophant" is basically a person who is a self-seeking flatterer, so make of it what you will.
4) What are some of your favorite tracks from the EP?
That question's always like trying to choose your favorite child. Unless you're a shitty parent, you just can't choose. I love 'em all.
5) What was the band's first show like?
Our first show was fun but a little awkward. I've been playing live with Atreyu for about 10 years straight. Playing onstage with 4 people who aren't in Atreyu takes a little getting used to. But we enjoyed ourselves nonetheless.
6) Do you have any fond or not so fond memories from playing NJ in the past?
We haven't played NJ as Fake Figures, but most of us have played NJ at some point or another. NJ is always a good time. Some of the funnest shows I've ever played have been at the Starland Ballroom. I love it when Jersey natives say "yous"...you just don't get that out here in California.
7) What are your thoughts on the current music scene?
I think the music scene is pretty blurry nowadays, which isn't necessarily a bad thing nor a good thing. It's just a lot harder for bands to stand out because music is so easily accessible today. Listeners have to filter through a lot more shitty music to find the good stuff.
8) What bands are you currently listening to?
Demon Hunter, Die Antwoord, Russian Circles....I could go on forever.
9) What can we expect from Fake Figures in 2012?
You can expect us to be making a shitload of noise in 2012.
You can pick up Fake Figures' debut EP Hail The Sycophants on iTunes.
