Interview: I Am The Avalanche

I Am The Avalanche are back with their first studio release in six years. Avalanche United was released earlier this month to rave reviews. The Brooklyn-based group is currently on the road with Saves The Day, Bayside and Tranist. Vocalist Vinnie Caruana gave us his thoughts on the new record, the punk scene and future plans.

1) How excited is everyone about the album finally coming out?

We are over the moon. It feels fantastic to share this music with thw world finally. The reception has been overwhelming. People are behind it.

2) How did the band hook up with I Surrender Records?

The owner and staff are close friends with the band and we started talking about working together when we'd see each other out in manhattan. Been a long road but we all achieved our goal.

3) What was the recording process like for the album?

It was a long process with very little pressure. We all were working jobs and had a monthly schedule where we knew when we'd be recording. This was completely DIY to the fullest. Not a single penny was spent til after the record was completed being tracked.

4) What can fans expect from the new album?

Honest songs that you won't ever stop listening too.

5) What are your thoughts on all of the up-and-coming bands in the hardcore/punk scene?

I think its a great time for punk music. There are real bands making real music. Which is a change from young bands spending more time on their hair and gawdy merch designs, then writing good music. Real music is back to our scene and the fakers are bummed.

6) What are you most looking forward to about the tour with Saves The Day & Bayside?

Having a record sitting on our merch table is really exciting. Our fans can't believe their eyes. Also I'm truly a fan of the bands and honored to call them my friends.

7) What bands are you currently listening to?

Owen, sharks, kinks, hull, drive like jehu, melvins, nofx, jets to brazil Babyshambles, built to spill

8) What's next for IATA after the Saves The Day tour?

We head to the UK,holland, germany, to headline for a few weeks with hostage calm. Will play a few shows in the northeast in january. Then back to UK, australia, asia. After that we headline a bit in the states, back to europe for festivals. Still waiting to see what's up with summer.
