Cage The Elephant

Stone Temple Pilots and Cage The Elephant stopped by Holmdel's PNC Bank Arts Center yesterday, September 5th. The two bands have been on the road together for the past month, covering the better part of the US. Last night was Cage The Elephant's last date with STP. They are now set to make an appearance at Austin City Limits Festival October 10th. The Bowling Green, KY group played an 11 song set which was made up of 6 new songs. The other five songs were from the groups debut self-titled album that hit shelves over two years ago. Parts of the crowd lit up when the group dove into their better known numbers such as "Ain't No Rest For The Wicked" and "In One Ear". A new song called "Indie Kids" is darker and grittier than most of their older material (think Nirvana's Bleach). The rock band is said to finally be finishing up their 2nd album, which is yet to have a release date. Be sure to check out a recent USA Today article on Cage The Elephant, which touches on their beginnings, success and highly anticipated new album.
Many would say that Stone Temple Pilots were in need of redeeming themselves after a lack luster PNC Bank performance back when the band initially reunited in 2008. Maybe it was because of their last show that selling tickets to their Art Center date was a little harder this time around. Either way Weiland & Co. seemed to have worked out whatever problems that were plaguing the group in the past. Things started off nicely just by STP taking the stage much quicker than the last time they were in Holmdel. The group kicked off their set with "Crackerman", which featured Scott screaming through a megaphone for most of the song. The band then proceeded to plow through their 19 song set playing all of the crowd favorites as well as some lesser known songs and even a Led Zeppelin cover. Overall the over two decade old rock group definitely surpassed their last PNC performance and may have reminded some people why they were once such a big deal.
