Islands @ Asbury Lanes 9.22.09

Islands made a almost surprise performance at Asbury Lanes this past Tuesday. This last minute record release show was criminally under attended, but it did not stop Islands from giving a quality set. The Montreal group's 3rd studio album Vapours, which came out the day of the show, is apparently more stripped down then their last LP. Here is what Nick Diamonds had to say in a Pitchfork interview.
I felt like I went too far in the other direction with Arm's Way. But I don't want to apologize for Arm's Way, and I don't want to be this cliché where I made a difficult second record and now it's a return to form-- but I do see the truth in that. I needed to withdraw from overblown metaphors and filling every possible sonic space. So this record is just made up of sequenced programming, synths, drum machines, guitars, and real bass. And an electric sitar. [Pitchfork Interview]
You can pick up Vapours here. On a side note it was Nick Thorburn's aka Nick Diamonds 21st birthday the night of the show! Don't worry their were just enough people in the crowd to buy him 21 shots.
Montagna & The Mouth To Mouth

Montagna & The Mouth To Mouth's are a relatively new band from Asbury Park that break the mold of the typical NJ sound. It's always great to find a band in NJ or anywhere, that is relatively unknown and is not only original, but GOOD too. If there is any justice in the world this six piece Indie/Folk band will be pushing some of these other typical over-hyped NJ bands out of the way and start making their own waves in the NJ scene. Definitely expect more coverage on these guys (and gals) to come. Also for a more accurate description of the bands see below.
montagna, laddy cannon, old bat, gasping for bear, david hasslecough, the apathy code, bubble/gum, the extras inc., strange things done in the midnight sun, heckler, romulus and remus, cats are everywhere, bird songs, just say yes, out like lambs, the chilling details, listen to radio, peer pressure, friendship bracelet, the slow wire. wow. surprised this show wasn't packed. then again I didn't know about it either.
Was the birthday comment a joke I didn't get? Because Nick is not 21 and his birthday is not in September, unless Wikipedia has lied to me all these years.
