Built To Spill @ Maxwell's 7.19.09
Monday, July 20, 2009 at 2:02AM Built to Spill

After watching Grand Duchy's (Frank Black) techies take over an hour to make sure everything was set up just right for the non sold out show at Maxwell's two days earlier, it was a bit surprising to see Built to Spill quickly make their way to the Maxwell's stage after the opening act (The New Numbers) with their gear in hand.
This intimate show had been causing a stir since it instantly sold out a couple months before. Fans were paying $100 for tickets on ebay, and one fan even offered (via Craigslist) to give away his extra ticket for free if they wrote a convincing essay on why they "NEEDED" to see the show, stating that he was a die-hard fan.
Built to Spill played for just about two hours, with the last 1/2 hour being an instrumental/jam. There was no planned set list, just the members asking each other which song they should play next. The group many times obliged to the audience's requests, such as 'Time Trap" & "Else". The sound was exceptional, even though most of the gear they were using wasn't even theirs. The show will definitely be one that people will talk about for years to come and everyone who was in attendance will probably never see another Built to Spill show like it.

yea, i was trying to find a decent ticket off craigs, but the ones under $50 kept getting swept up. would have loved to here.
good stuff. how was the new song?
the new song was short and poppy-sort of a wistful tune about the past. the chorus talked about "hindsight" and his childhood. i thought it was really good.
wow, thanks.
ok set list, makes me feel less bad for missing this.
Else was amazing last night.
Wasnt really a set list. More like people screaming out songs and them playing things on the fly. The Band hung out after the show and seemed really happy about the crowd and the night.
