Brand New @ Nassau Coliseum 11.28.09

Brand New

Glassjaw

This past Saturday, Brand New took the Nassau Coliseum stage to a sold out audience (approx. 18,000 people). This hometown headlining show was in many ways nine years in the making. After forming back in 2000, Brand New wasted no time exposing their music to the world by doing what the band has stated is the most important part of being a musician, performing live. During these nine years Brand New were never the "it" band when it came media and they never received very much radio play, yet winning over fans at the thousands of shows they've played has made them known as indie rock stalwarts. This even being more so in their hometown, where last night everyone was either talking about the first time they saw Brand New or which record "changed their life". Even the Nassau Coliseum employee that escorted me down to the stage, when I asked her if she was a fan, admitted her yearbook quote was "back in school they never taught us what we needed to know."

Brand New took the stage around 9:15pm after a slew of openers that included Kevin Devine, Manchester Orchestra, Thrice and Glassjaw. The group opened with "Welcome to Bangkok" an all instrumental track off The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me and jumped right into the high powered "Sink", off their latest release Daisy. By this time the rush of crowd surfers and "oh my god" screams were in full swing. Brand New's noisy, overdriven sound was even more alluring over the arenas massive sound system. Brand New continued to plow through their 18 song set list flawlessly. They even made it seem as if they had been playing the songs off of Daisy live for years. High points of their set were Sink, Sic Transit, Vices, Gasoline, Play Crack the Sky and Seventy Times 7. After not having said much to the crowd, Jesse Lacey stated how everything that has happen to them over the years wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for the people who first started supporting their music in Long Island. As the cheers started to louden Brand New jumped into their final song of the night, Seventy Times Seven, a long time fan favorite off their very first LP, Your Favorite Weapon.

Personally, expectations for this show were extremely high considering the last time I saw the Long Island quartet in an arena (Madison Square Garden) they put on one of my favorite sets by any band ever. Overall, their Nassau Coliseum performance lived up to the bar they had set and though they didn't wreak as much havoc as when they played MSG, they did however get to perform a lot more than eight songs. The only down point of the night was Brand New not playing an encore, but then again Brand New may just be one of the very few bands to realize the whole act of nicely placing your equipment down and walking off stage only to walk back minutes later is kind of, how should i put this, douchey.

Brand New do sound awesome in large venues. Their newer music is definitely meant to be loud and Nassau Coliseum was the perfect place for them. I can't believe they didn't play an encore though, pretty weird.

glassjaw brought it too!

One of the worst shows ever

Nice photos and a good setlist. But the band was really mehh.
Why Jesse chooses to yelp his vocals nine times out of ten is really unbecoming.
He has a voice and he just chooses to butcher it.
So effin' frustrating.
The concert's best moments were the quieter meditations: "Luca," "Limousine," "Jesus Christ," "You Stole."

how the hell could you take no photos of Manchester, Thrice, or KDev?

place definately wasnt sold out, parts of the upper bowl were tarped offf

there was nobody in the last 5 rows in the top row at all

Absolutely INCREDIBLE. The song selection was great and Jesse was amazing. Only downside was there was no sign of Soco Amaretto Lime or Quiet Things..but hey, I'm not complaining whatsoever.

I regret going. Glassjaw was good. Brand New was incredibly boring. They have completely abandoned their first 2 cds which are clearly their best...

Its sad that they refuse to play things their fans, who have made them who they are, want to hear.

This will be the last time i waste my money on them.

Ali - they played four songs from their first two records. that is not "completely abandoning" them, as you said. they've released four records, you can't expect them (or any band who has four records out) to continue to play songs that are 8+ years old. they're writing new music for a reason. if that makes you not a fan, so be it, but realize that it's your problem, not the band's.

^^^ tru dat

November 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjesse lacey

it's not so much as they "abandoned" the first 2 albums, but if you check setlists from other shows on this tour they played 3-4 songs off YFW & Deja, and to not do that at a hometown show is kind of strange to me. oh well.

anyone who says the first cd is the best has no taste in music. deja and tdagarim are their two best cds. daisy was a bit of a disappointment but bands progress. that's how it goes. also the bassist wrote daisy, not jesse lacey.

what annoyed me about this show was that they clearly undersold the floor seats. it was barely 3/4 full and i logged onto ticketmaster the second the first ticketmaster sale started and all the GA seats were sold out. the experience from the floor is not comparable to one in bleachers.

"anyone who says the first cd is the best has no taste in music."

amen.

November 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterviv

You cant say that someone who likes thier first cd has no taste in music, in my opinion it is thier best cd.. its all opinion... i was personally bored with all thier new stuff, they used to be fun now they are like said in earlier posts brand mehh....

November 30, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterMe

meghan- i can name numerous bands with more albums than brand new has that continue to play old stuff.. bands do write new music for a reason, and yes by all means play it, but they cant abandon the stuff that made them who they are, completely.. what bothers me is they played songs like mix tape and jude law along with 70x7, then a few off deja as well on this tour... but they only play 70x7 at thier hometown show, that is supposed to be the biggest show of the tour, and not even play an encore... idk just kind of a letdown. im tired of reading about people saying that other people have no taste in music, so what someone likes somthing different than you do.. get over it already!

November 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterjohn

more songs than most other bands I see play, including their encore.

November 30, 2009 | Unregistered Commenteryoyoma

Glassjaw killed it...if only they played longer...now..I like Brand New...well...I thought I did...I must admit I don't like their new music and Deja is my favorite album by them. God, was that show boring. my boyfriend who was admittedly dragged has never heard of Brand New (or any band besides GJ) fell asleep. He legit fell asleep. I was close behind. Sorry if you think I have no taste in music but I don't go to shows to take naps. I have seen Brand New before and have enjoyed them, but I will not go see them again.

i drove from Cincinnati, OH just to see this show and i thought it was incredible all around. I'm not a huge Manchester Orchestra fan, but Thrice, Glassjaw and Brand New all killed it. I wish Thrice and Glassjaw would've played longer, but thats my only complaint. Incredible night

I thought the show was great. I have seen them many times in smaller venues and once before previously this tour in Chicago. I think the general admission really gets the full effect of the show. I was stuck in the seats but still had a great time. Never saw them in front of this large of a crowd, around 18,000. Only criticism is that jesse did seem to scream some of the most lyrically beautiful parts of some songs which I think was frustrating. But I am not a fan of screaming unless it is used sparsely. I think the venue made the slower songs like limo and play crack the sky better as the whole arena was blacked out with a single spot light on jesse and only lighter flames in the crowd really helped drive home the mood of these songs.

John- I would like to direct you to the last four words of your post. Follow them.

December 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterhoot

to the person who said that daisy was written by the bassist, i think you should get your facts straight before trying to tell people that they don't know what they're talking about.

December 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterdejasenti

Dear anyone who gets disappointed that they didn't play an encore,
I've been to a lot of there shows, and I don't remember them ever coming out for an encore, maybe like five years ago. But definetly not in the past two or three years. Also all there albums are good. You can't compare Your Favorite Weapon to Daisy. They are a completely different band now. Obviously there music is going to change. And Obviously they are going to play more new music than old music. Why wouldn't they? They are on tour for the release of Daisy. If you didn't go to the show expecting to hear mostly Daisy and The Devil and God then you are dumb. They were not boring what so ever.

December 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbutthole

O also ticketmaster put up more general admission tickets a few days before the show. And Vinnie wrote most of Daisy, not all. But he's not the bassist.

December 1, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterbutthole

Anyone know if theres any bootlegs of this show out there? Got too drunk and blacked out so i dont remember nothin lol
